In my case, I would have to say that Atlas Shrugged, by Ann Rand, has had the biggest influence on my life. It was through this life-changing book that I discovered the beauty of capitalism and the importance of self-esteem to happiness. Atlas Shrugged is the kind of book that makes you reconsider your deepest values, while you are being entertained. I just re-read the book again from cover to cover and I will probably do the same every year just to keep things in perspective. Have there been any books that have impacted your life in the same way? How did they change your life and what did you do differently after reading them?

On November 20, 1991, the Library of Congress released the results of a survey (Source: NYTimes, November 20, 1991) in which they asked pretty much the same question as above. Perhaps not surprisingly, the number one choice of readers was The Bible. However, some of the other choices may surprise you. Here is the list of the top 10 (actually 13 since 4 tied for 10th place) most influential books as rated by readers.

  • The Bible
  • Atlas Shrugged, by Ann Rand
  • The Road Less Traveled, by M Scott Peck
  • To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee
  • The Lord of the Rings, by J. R. R. Tolkien
  • Gone with the Wind, by Margaret Mitchell
  • How to Win Friends and Influence People, by Dale Carnegie
  • The Book of Mormon
  • The Feminine Mystique, by Betty Friedan
  • A Gift from the Sea, by Anne Morrow Lindbergh
  • Man’s Search for Meaning, by Victor Frankl
  • Passages, by Gail Sheehy
  • When Bad Things Happen to Good People, by Harold S. Kushner

Since one of my personal passions is listening to audiobooks, one of the first things that I did when I saw this list was to check to see how many of the books of the list are also available in audiobook format. The good news is that all of the books above, with the exceptions of To Kill a Mockingbird, The Book of Mormon, and Passages, are available as audiobooks. I’ve already managed to listen to the entire Bible and my goal for the next six months is to make it through the entire list.

All the best and happy reading!

I have an article in my blog talking about the benefits of reading. So this post will introduce you to teach your child to love reading.Everyone wants their children to be wise. But this deponds on the books they have read.

     CHOOSE THE RIGHT BOOKS

Choose books that have large colorful pictures or photos; a few words on a page; rich language; and relate to concepts, people, or things in children’s lives. With this exposure, young children learn that books and reading explain the world they live in and ultimately help them better understand themselves. Sound like a tall order for a toddler?

Not really when you consider perennial favorites such as The Hungry Caterpillar. This book does not contain many words but teaches counting and science concepts.

     READ OUT LOUD

Read to children regularly and often. Pick a regular reading time, but also watch for opportunities to read books, signs, letters, or other print spontaneously. The experience of reading as a typical, everyday occurrence helps children gain confidence that they can learn to read themselves.

Stories influence children’s learning for life. Some research suggests that the more stories children hear before entering school, the more likely they will be successful academically. Listening to books benefits their vocabulary and comprehension. Continue reading »

I read less books than before because I buy a computer. You know I can read them on the websites. So I jst wonder if the internet will replace the libraries.

Computer enthusiasts have been discussing the concept of a paperless society for many many years. This would mean no more receipts, magazines, books, newspapers and more. The savings this would bring to America is enormous, but the cost to embrace this type of change would be considerable in the short term. One institution that is in no danger of going paperless anytime soon is the Public Library.

Internet and computer use has grown by leaps and bounds over the last 20 years. Home users have access to more information at a faster rate, and the number of people taking advantage of this technology grows everyday. It is no surprise that public libraries have seen a drop in patronage due to this. To make matters worse, the technology that is available at public libraries tends to be very out of date by way of comparison to what many Americans have at home. The American Library Association and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation funded a study that revealed demand for information technology in public libraries has stretched what existing resources that exist to their limit. Over 70% of the studied libraries were reportedly the only source of free computer and Internet access for their communities. Only 25% of the libraries studied claimed to have the computers they needed to meet the demands of their users, and there is no change seen in the horizon that will fix this issue. During peak usage hours many libraries reported more than an hour wait for computer access. Continue reading »
